What is a CSA

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a model that arose in the “1960's in Germany, Switzerland and Japan as a response to concerns about food safety.” CSA members pay in advance for a share and anticipate its delivery. By prepaying, the member allows the farm to use the revenue in their operation: to buy seed, pay for labor, fix equipment, etc. Members understand the risks of investing in a farming operation. Edible Earth Farm believes the benefits of joining our CSA outweigh the risks. We have a history of providing value and quality, even in the record setting weather of 2011. A CSA share purchased from Edible Earth Farm is an investment in the future of our farm, and in exchange you will enjoy fresh, local fruits and vegetables and have an opportunity to learn about your farmers.

What Will Be in My CSA Share

Some CSA's offer their small share customers fewer items and less variety. Not us, we strive to provide a wide variety of fruits and vegetables to all members, regardless of size. This year we are growing 200+ varieties in an effort to provide our CSA customers with more variety than ever.

Each week CSA members will receive a box filled with fresh, USDA certified organic and locally grown fruits and vegetables. CSA boxes contain only the items that are available to harvest that week. This allows members to eat seasonally as nature intended. The amount of product in a CSA box will depend on the members share size (small or large). It will also depend on the time of year. Spring shares tend to be lighter. As the season progresses, shares will become laden with an increasing variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Examples of Edible Earth Farm's CSA Shares
We expect our 2012 CSA to include more variety than 2011. Our Large CSA Share is almost double the size of a small share. A Small share feeds 1-2 adults and a Large share feeds 2-3 adults.

Week 1: Two bags of leaf lettuce, bunch of green onions, bunch of fresh herbs, garlic scapes, carrots, purple and green pac choi, flowers, rhubarb and dried organic fruit.

Large CSA shares received greater quantities of the above items plus: one bag of spinach, sprouts, one bag of kale and swiss chard.

Week 10: Bag of lettuce mix, bell and jalapeno peppers, eggplant, sweet corn, tomatoes, zucchini, red potatoes, beans-yellow, green & burgundy, cucumbers, red & yellow onions and peaches.

Large CSA shares received greater quantities of the above items plus: carrots, red beets, shallots, and a head of cabbage.

Week 20: Acorn squash, buttercup squash, red & white potatoes, red & yellow onions, one bag of lettuce mix, bunch of tatsoi, one bag of collard greens, one bag of kale, free-range eggs, cubanelle peppers, garlic and Chinese cabbage.

Large CSA shares received greater quantities of the above items.

When Does the 2012 CSA Begin

Nature influences our CSA start date. We strive to begin CSA deliveries the first or second week of June. Deliveries will be made weekly for 20 weeks ending in late October or early November. Our CSA start date will be announced to members via e-mail. We'll also announce the CSA start date on Facebook, Twitter and our website.

What are CSA Add-Ons

Add-ons are additional items that can be purchased weekly and are delivered alongside a member's CSA share. Edible Earth Farm partners with local producers to provide the following additional add-on items: grass-fed beef, all-natural chicken & eggs, fruit, maple syrup & honey, organic coffee, natural bath & body products and cheese & butter, . CSA members can also choose from a large selection of items from our stock at our country shoppe. Items include: organic sugar, dried fruits & nuts and other bulk food items.

We are pleased to feature products from these great local producers: Pompeii Street Soap Company, Happy Mug Coffee Co., A-Jay Farm, Dewbrook Apiaries and Yeany's Maple Syrup.
